It is an open world platform video game released in 2001 by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation2. It's the first game in the Jak and Daxter franchise. The game follows Jak, a young boy who attempts to help his friend Daxter. Daxter gets converted into a fictional hybrid of a weasel and an otter known as Ottsel. They both learn from Samos the sage that Maia Acheron and Gol plan to flood the world with a dark eco, and they are the ones who can save the globe.
The player takes the role of Jak, a silent and quiet hero. As they travel across the off-limits area, they find ancient tech and get attacked by a giant. In the fight, Daxter falls into a pool of Dark Eco and turns into an Ottsel. Green Sage tells them to go north in search of a person who can turn Daxter back. As the game moves forward, the plot unravels. The story is attractive due to the fascinating characters the player meets along the way. The game has a wide range of mini-games and missions that provide diversity in the gameplay experience.
It is a platform game where the aim is to collect items to progress through the levels. Jak has abilities like rapid spinning kick, double jumping, and glide punching. There's a life meter, so whenever Jak gets hit by the enemies, comes in contact with lethal surfaces, and falls from the heights, the meter decreases. The player has to collect various items throughout the game, but the important one is the Power cells. They energize the machinery required to go to the next level. Another important collectible is the Scout flies. There are seven flies, and if the player collects all of them, that results in rewards. The game story revolves around dark eco, and they come in six different colors. Green eco restores health; red eco increases the attack power; blue eco increases speed; yellow allows to shoot a burst of energy. Apart from these, there is Dark and Light eco. Dark eco acts as obstacles, and Light eco act as a weapon in the battle with the boss. There are total three bosses in the game. If the player defeats the first boss, he/she receives power cells; for defeating the second boss, the player gets the entry to the Mountain Pass. The last and the final boss is an ancient giant robot; if the player defeats him, it's the end of the game.
