Dragon Ball Z - Budokai 3, released in 2004, is a fighting video game based on the popular Dragon Ball Z anime series. Dimps developed the game, and Atari published it for the PlayStation 2. The story mode of the game still plays again through the story of Z, although this time, the game introduces many new characters who are from outside the main plot. They include Gogeta from the DBZ films, Bardock, the Super Saiyan 4, and Omega Shenron transformations from the Dragon Ball GT, Broly, Kid Goku, and Demon King Piccolo, and Cooler.
In this game, the player can customize each character by using a 7-slot skill tray. They can select up to any seven skills and then give the playable character to a fighter. A few new gameplay mechanics introduced in this version are the Ki, Transformation, Dodging, Beam Struggle, Items, Dragon Rush, Hyper Mode, Free Flight, Ultimate Attacks, Fusion.
In the Ki, the player character now has a base Ki level, which will increase or decrease until it is at the base level. In Beam Struggle if two, beam attacks clash, a beam struggle is activated instead of destroying each other. Also, the item capsules which the player obtains in the battle can only be used once, and they have different effects.
