It is a platform video game published for Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Microsoft Windows and Sony PlayStation by UbiSoft. Razorbeard leads an army of evil mechanical pirates to enslave the population of the Rayman's world. It's up to Rayman to collect the four magical masks which will awaken the sleeping god and help him defeat the pirates. Along his journey, he goes through various adventures like free the creatures from the pirates, escape from the pirate ship and so on. Rayman will also encounter a lot of other characters to aid him in his quests such as a muscle-headed giant, a water snake, magical fairies and others.
The game revolves around the invasion and occupation of the world known as Glade of Dreams, by an army of interstellar Robot-Pirates, led by Razorbeard. Rayman, Gobox and other friends battle against these pirate armies, but they capture Rayman, and he also loses his power. Ly, the fairy, telepathically talks with Rayman who tells him about the capture of many fighters and that the core has shattered into thousand Lums. To get more information about the backstory of the game's world, the player has to collect the lums.
The player traverses through a linear sequence of levels like to fight the enemy Robot-Pirates, solve puzzles and collect lums. If the player gets enough lums, he/she gets access to new parts of the world. The game begins with minimal abilities of Rayman, but he can gain them as the game progresses. The primary weapon is Rayman's fist, with which he shoots energy orbs. With the use of Purple lums, Rayman gains the ability to swing over large gaps.
In addition to the story sequence, there are many levels in which the player can get bonuses. If the players collect all lums and break all cages in a level, then the player unlocks a bonus level.
