It is a fighting game released in 1995 for the arcades that become a massive phenomenon after its release. This game is the updated version of Mortal Kombat 3 with some gameplay changes and characters such as Scorpion, Kitana, and Reptile. The game is known for its realistic look and gruesome fatalities like ripping heads off. One of the new addition to this game is the tournament option; it is a 2-on-2 Kombat Mode with human fighters on either side, and there is also an 8-player. These two modes provide innovation to the traditional gameplay and offer more replay value to the game. Some of the original characters from the previous instalments received new combos and moves. The game has a block button, which makes it completely different and enjoyable.
The plot begins with Shao Kahn, who is fed up with his successive defeats to Liu Kang. He forms a plan to revive his Queen Sindel with the help of Shang Tsung and Shadow priests. But she can only be restored in the Earthrealm. Once she is resurrected, Shao Kahn can cross the boundary. When Sindel gets reincarnated in the Earthrealm, Shao Kahn goes across the dimensions to retrieve her. Thus, the Earthrealm becomes a part of the Outworld, and billions of inhabitants get killed instantly. Only a few remain alive as Raiden guards their souls. He tells them they have to stop Shao Kahn, but he cannot interfere because he has no power in Outworld, and now Earthrealm is also partly merged with Outworld. Shao Kahn orders his squads to roam and kill any survivors in the Earth realm. Raiden only protects the soul, not the body, so the survivors have to fight Kahn's army and defeat him.
