As Batman, the player goes through numerous levels of bosses and enemies and in the showdown faces the main boss, the Joker, in the bell tower.
There are rumors of a vigilante known as Batman who targets the Gotham city criminals. The industrialist Bruce Wayne is the Batman in secret, who chose this path after the murder of his parents. Mob boss Carl Grissom sends Jack Napier to raid Axis Chemicals. When Batman arrives to prevent Napier's escape, he falls into a vat of chemicals and survives with chalk-white skin, green hair, and a grin. He takes the Joker's name, which is the main antagonist of the game and starts terrorizing the city with his product that causes the victims to die laughing. Batman begins to find a way to stop Joker. Eventually, Batman realizes that it was Joker who had killed his parents. The final face-off takes place between Batman and the Joker at the Gotham Cathedral.
