Sonic Riders, released in the year 2006, is a racing video game under the Sonic the Hedgehog video games series on hoverboards. Now Production and Sonic Team developed the game, and Sega published it for the GameCube.
Sonic Riders focuses on characters racing each other using Extreme Gear, an anti-gravity-equipped vehicle comprising hoverbikes, hoverboards, and hover skates. There are 16 tracks in the game, where the player battles against characters—either controlled by other players or computers in a story and battle modes. Players compete to complete three laps around a racetrack before their competitors finish the race in the first place.
A key element of gameplay is the air tank on the lower right-hand side of the screen. Air works as the fuel for Extreme Gear and depletes slowly as the race goes on. The characters can also perform a Boost move, which will supply them with an abrupt burst of speed at the cost of a certain amount of air. Additionally, if a player boosts their opponent, their player character will attack and hit the opponent for a short period. Air is also more quickly consumed using building tension before a jump and cornering, which enables the player to round sharp corners with ease.
