The game is based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime series and released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance. The basis of this card game is a one on one duel, where various monsters pit against each other, and the aim is to reduce the opponent's life to zero. The Sacred Cards holds all of the fun, critical elements of the dueling gameplay in an RPG atmosphere. Players roam around Battle City, and the Kaiba Corporation is sponsoring a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. The players must challenge other Yu-Gi-Oh duellists. If the players defeat the opponents with a Locator card, they win his card and challenge the other opponents. The battles are similar to the Yu-Gi-Oh! A card game where players take a turn and discard the creatures that can attack each other, and the Duellist who runs out of hit points loses. Each victory increases the players' level that will give them the ability to have and utilize more powerful cards. The rules of the game are little different from the real card game. An elemental ruling is not present in the actual card game, such as water beats fire; electricity beats water.
In the beginning, the player and his friends Joey Wheeler and Yugi Moto prepare for the card game competition: Duel Monsters. To win the tournament, the player must have all the six Locator cards, and only then can the player enter into the finals. Marik has a band of ghouls to steal the Egyptian card and disrupt the battle so that he can bring darkness into the world. The ghouls take control of the city, and the card shop owner teams up with Marik and tries to kill the player. Then comes Ishizu Ishtar, who challenges the player to see if he can hold a God card. After the win over her, the player has to face Seto Kaiba to obtain the first God card. After the player defeats Marik in the finals, it's revealed that it's one of Marik's servants disguised as him. The real one is one of the friends of Yugi, Namu. Now, the player must defeat Marik to save the world.
