5 Tips To Keep Your Money Safe At Online Casinos

Keeping your money safe at online casinos doesn’t have to be difficult. Players worry about their funds and are scared they’ll be stolen somehow. It should ease your fears a bit to know most online casinos are extremely safe and rarely get hacked.

If you’re still uneasy, follow these five tips to ensure your money is always kept as safe as can be:

Join credible casino sites

Don’t join a casino you can’t trust. Read different reviews, look at Trustpilot scores and keep a very close eye on the site’s security features. Most casinos won’t publicise their full cybersecurity measures - like the anti-virus software they use, etc. - but they will show one critical thing to tell you the site is secure:

SSL encryption

This is evident if the site’s URL starts with HTTPS instead of HTTP. Cloudflare explains the importance of SSL by stating it encrypts data moving between a user and a web server. At an online casino, this will include all the information and financial data you put on the site. SSL works by scrambling this, so if someone does access the data, they won’t see what it is.

Never join casinos without a secure connection - always look for HTTPS and check your browser as it’ll tell you if the site isn’t secure.

Try to deposit using a credit card when possible

Credit cards are the safest payment method you can use. They’re backed by lots of security and credit card providers are quick to spot any fraudulent acts. You’ll know instantly if someone tries to use your card details and can immediately block the card to mitigate any damage.

Moreover, if you happen to accidentally join a bad casino and deposit money that gets stolen, a credit card gives you some breathing room.

You can’t get the money back (that was your fault) but you will have at least a month until you need to pay off your credit card bill, so it’s not as much of an issue. Finding a credit card deposit casino can be difficult depending on where you’re from.

Most countries will allow this payment method but the UK has laws against this. No British casinos will accept credit cards, though we don’t think this is a huge problem. You’re left with two options:

  • Join a casino outside the UK, or;
  • Opt for a different payment method

Both avenues will result in you keeping your money safe, so it depends on which one you’d rather try.

Only use payment methods you trust

Speaking of other payment methods, you’re likely to find a host of them across different sites depending on where the website is registered. A few popular payment methods include:

  • PayPal
  • Neosurf
  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Trustly
  • Direct bank transfers
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

All of these options are well-known and a quick Google search will tell you they’re trustworthy. Using them means you’re using a secure transaction method, so your money will be safe.

You may find an online casino with none of these methods. If that’s the case, don’t use it! You also might see casinos with only one of these options and a tonne you’ve never heard of. It’s generally only wise to use a payment method you’ve either heard of, used before or can find concrete evidence of being secure & trustworthy.

Our preference is to use options like PayPal or other e-wallets. Why? Because they typically utilise two-factor authentication when you make transactions. You’ll need a password, plus an additional confirmation method to initiate the payment. It’s way harder for someone to steal your details and attempt to either withdraw funds from your casino account or deposit lots of money this way!

Create a strong password for your account

Without wanting to pin the blame on the player, most money problems at online casinos stem from terrible account passwords. You create a casino account and use the same password you use for everything. It’s easy to guess, someone hacks into your account and then steals your winnings.

It’s made even easier if your passwords for different payment accounts are the same too!

You must create strong, unique passwords for everything. Which? has some fantastic advice we never considered before; make passphrases instead of passwords. This could be a phrase that makes sense - “yellow snow is bad to eat” or one that’s completely random “brown yellow cream mountain”. It’s much harder for someone to guess a passphrase because it’s a) longer and b) more complex.

Throw in some numbers and different capital letters for added security and you’ve got a highly secure password protecting your casino account and keeping your money safe.

Use a VPN for added security

You can go one step further and use a VPN to bring a new layer of security to things. This encrypts your IP address and makes your browsing habits private. It’s infinitely harder for a hacker to access your casino accounts if you play games with a VPN running.

One thing to consider; some casinos don’t like you using VPNs to pretend you’re in a different country. This doesn’t mean you can’t use one - you need to set it to the same country so your IP is obscured but the casino site still thinks you’re in the same region.

Being worried about your money is understandable when using online casinos. You can win a lot of money, and then see it swept away by a simple hack or scam.
